Week Six - The Real Value of Time
The other day, my husband asked me what I did, and it was a real eye-opener. At the time he asked, I had done 2 things... I dropped off my daughter at camp, did the groceries, and just like that, with a blink of an eye, it was already 2 pm. It made me reflect on how different my days are now compared to when I was working and constantly in a rush.
When I was working, everything was a mad dash. Dropping off my daughter at school or camp meant hurried goodbyes, rushing through the grocery store meant grabbing what I needed without really looking or constant abundance of things i didn't really need with online deliveries, and every moment felt like it was dictated by the clock. But now, without the constant pressure, I can take my time. I linger at camp to chat with other parents and see my daughter interact with other kids, I enjoy browsing every aisle at the grocery store, and I listen to a audiobooks while putting away groceries and making lunch.
Fully Appreciating the Moment
There’s a profound difference between living in the moment and racing against it. When you’re always in a rush, you miss out on the little joys. You’re not really present. Now, I can savour the time I spend with my daughter, enjoy the process of choosing fresh produce, and relish in the calm of my home while organizing the groceries or cleaning out the pantry. I move on to the next thing when it’s time, not because I’m forced to.
Embracing the Slow
This summer, I’m embracing a slower pace. I’m taking courses on LinkedIn and other online platforms, reading books to soak up as much knowledge as I can before going back to whatever new adventure awaits in the fall. I’m excited for the Paris Olympics and can’t wait to watch the summer games.
Finding Balance
There’s a balance to be found between productivity and presence. It’s important to manage our time well, but not at the expense of our well-being and the precious moments life has to offer. By slowing down, we can find joy in the mundane and appreciate the beauty in the everyday.
So next time you find yourself in a rush, take a moment to pause. Look around. Breathe. Life is happening now, and it’s too precious to be missed.
